One of our members cannot attend meetings, and has asked if anyone would like to play online. Following his lead, if anyone else would like to play with other UCD chess players online, just send us an email with usernames, websites, and any links to profile pages you want to share. The information will be put on the Members page (that member who contacted us is already on there). If you want to include ratings as well (please state who issues that rating), we can find a way to compile the information in a clear way once some responses start to come in.

Upcoming Sacramento Team Chess Tournament

One of our fellow club members is trying to organize a team to compete in a sacramento chess club team tournament.

Every year, the sacramento chess club puts on a 6-round team chess tournament event, one round every Tuesday night for six Wednesdays. UC Davis has played in the past and done fairly well, however, last year, we did not field a team.

The tournament is coming up: I (Phil) am happy to captain this year / handle administrative issues; however I need your support as volunteers.

Ideally, we would like to have a spread of players of various strengths, with a special invitation to players who may have not played in a tournament before. You don't have to play every week, if you want to be an alternate.

Here is some information:

1-24 Sacramento Chess Club Team Championship: Captains and Organizational Meeting will be held between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. We need team captains to be there with the names of players on their team and individuals who would like to play but are not on teams. Team details below.

1-31>3-13 Sacramento Chess Club Team Championship. Round Robin. 6 person teams. No team may have more than 3 alternates. The average rating for any given night may not exceed 1750. For purposes of calculating the adjusted ratings, any player rated over 2200 will count as 2200; any player rated under 1300 and unrated players will count as 1300. Ratings will be based on the January 2012 Supplement. Trophies for the members of the winning team and plaques to the best board score. (To win a board prize, a player must play 60% of the available games on that board. For example, if there are 5 games in the event, a player must play 3 games on a board to win the board prize.) All rounds start at 6:55 pm.

Tourmanent Results, Recent Photos, and Membership Fees

Hi everyone, I'm happy to say that our Blitz Tournament last night was very successful. Each player got to play 8 games and we even finished on time! Below are the results of the tournament, and congratulations to the winners and everyone who participated!

1st: Johnathan (7.5 points)
2nd: Tie: Phil (6 points), Andy (6 points)
4th: James (5.5 points)

We have also uploaded pictures taken at the Halloween Party and the Blitz Tournament, which you can see at our Picasa Web Album.

Finally, after calculating the clubs budget, we have decided that we need to ask for a membership fee to offset club expenses. We will be asking for $10 from each member. Membership has some perks, including free entry into 1 of our future tournaments. Those club members who already paid to play in the Blitz Tournament, we would only ask for $6, since you already paid $4 to enter, and consider that tournament as your free entry.

If we could get $10 from each member, it would go a long way to helping out the club. Our first priority is to offset registration costs, and second is to get our own equipment. The boards we use are borrowed from the Sacramento Chess Club, so we'd like to be more self-sufficient and perhaps get clocks as well.

So please, at one of our upcoming meetings, talk to one of the officers about your membership fee.

Fall Quarter Blitz 2011

The Chess Club will be hosting its first tournament of the school year this upcoming November 14th. It will be a blitz tournament, so bring your boards and especially clocks!

Event Details
Date: Monday, November 14th.
Time: 6-8pm (please be prompt!)
Location: ARC Meeting Room 2 (map)

Entry Fee: $4.
For every entry fee, $3 will go towards prizes for the top winners, $1 goes to support Chess Club operations.

Tournament Rules
4 Round Blitz Tournament.
Each round play your opponent twice (2 games per round). Once as white pieces, once as black pieces.
Swiss Round Robin.
5 Minute time controls.
Touch Move.

Chess Club Halloween Party

Halloween is on a Monday this year, which is also Chess Club day. The other officers and I were thinking that it might be fun to have a little mini party by playing chess in costume (with a costume contest -- and a prize for the winner), and maybe bringing food and drink and stuff as a sort of potluck. And small bags of candy for everyone. :)

Chess-themed Halloween costumes are not required, but may garner you more votes in the contest!

Good News Everyone! On-Campus Meetings Finalized!

The club is registered and we have reserved rooms to play.

We will be meeting on campus in the ARC on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-8pm. The rooms where we play are Meeting Room 2 (Monday) and Meeting Room 1 (Thursday). A general map to their location in the ARC is on the Meetings page of this site.

THE FIRST MEETING will be Thursday, October 13th in Meeting Room 1, 6-8pm.

The club has boards and clocks, but feel free to bring extra if you have them.

Chess club asks just one more voluntary thing from you. If you have time, and paper, it would really help the club out if you could print out this flyer, and post it around one buildings on campus. If we can get about 10-15 members or so to do this at the busiest buildings, it will go a long way to recruiting new members.

Some busy places: The MU, Silo, ARC, Hunt, Wellman, Shields, Olson, Bainer, and the freshman dorms. Any other buildings are great too.

Fall Quarter 2011

Hello all,

We are currently in the process of re-registering and reserving space for the club to meet this fall quarter. Chess Club has to do this every school year, and it can take a week or so for the paperwork to get approved.

So stay cool and check back for meeting times and locations. Until we get a room to play in on campus, we're working on meeting in public at a coffee shop, park, or campus patios.

In the mean time, we are starting a brand new mailing list. So please, send a quick email to aggiechess@gmail.com saying you would like to receive email notifications from the club on the latest news and events. We are asking both new and returning members to do this. Thank you!

Chess Club in Summer

Hello all,

Because memorial day weekend is this week and finals start next week, we wont be having any more official meetings during spring quarter.

For summer, we may try to get together at local cafe's and restaurants. Check back for more info on when and where. As of now there are no plans to reserve a weekly meeting time, but that could change.

Spring 2011 Agenda

Hello everyone!

Spring is in the air and you know what that means: it's time to get our chess on! The first club meeting will be held this Monday (April 18th) in the ARC from 4-7 in Meeting Room 1. Since the meetings are weekly instead of biweekly, they will be three hours long instead of two hours. However since the weather has been so nice out, we will also be holding informal meetings throughout the quarter at various cafes and eateries. :)

Also, we are in the process of obtaining T-SHIRTS. We need to know how many of you are interested in buying an official UC Davis Chess Club t-shirt that says "You're forked now!" so if you want one, please let us know as soon as possible!

Round 7 of Tournament Back On

Hey all,

Since I didn't get quite the affirmative response about my suggested end to the tournament, I decided just to run things as normal and pair you guys up for a final 7th round. I should have the prizes ready, so come even if you don't think you will place! See you guys Thursday.

Round 6 Pairings

Here are the pairings for round 6. I know they may seem unusual, but keep in mind many of the top players have already played each other, and the colors worked out much better with these pairings.

I would also like to suggest that we have tomorrows round be the last round, and reserve the last date (March 10th) for blitz matches in case of ties.

Finally, I have decided that since you all competed in the first weekly tournament in the club's history and were subjected to changing rules and errors in general on my part, that I will give all the entry fee money back as prize money. Here is what I came up with:

1st- 18 dollars
2nd- 9 dollars
3rd- 6 dollars
?th- 3 dollars

The last prize is a bonus prize (to someone who finishes in the lower half of the tournament). I will not list it here so that no one purposefully loses...

I will explain how the blitz tie breaker matches will work if everyone agrees to the change I suggested above in a later email.

Hey everyone,

Attached is the Pairings for this weeks round. Reminder: please tell me ASAP if you are going to have to take a bye during for a specific round, last week I had to give out two half point byes and two full point byes (which should never happen!) due to last minute unforeseen circumstances. I will no longer be taking bye requests the day of the tournament, and if you do not show up to the round you will be forfeited, two forfeits will mean expulsion from the tournament.

A second note, The priority of pairings is largely due to point class (2,1.5,1,.5,etc) and opponent (meaning you cannot play the same person twice), and then color. This means that you may have to play a color (white or black) twice in a row, especially if you have a full or half point bye the previous round. This problem has not occurred yet, but it will come up later in the tournament! Finally, please tell me if you have already played your opponent in a previous round, as this should not happen and I will fix the pairings accordingly.

If you just want to come to sign up, you may do so anytime before the meetings end at 7 pm. Winter Quarter Chess Club Meetings and Tournament!

Hey all!

Hope everyone had a great break and a pleasant start to their quarter. We will be doing things a bit differently this quarter. We will have our normal club meeting Wednesdays 4-6 pm in ARC meeting room one, just like last quarter. However, we will also be hosting a weekly tournament (Due to popular demand!) that will take place on Thursdays 5-7 pm in the same location (ARC meeting room 1). Regular meetings on Wednesdays start this upcoming week and continue until the week before finals (Wednesdays 1/12-3/9). We also have next week's Thursday (1/13) scheduled, but I would like to use this meeting time to talk more in depth about tournament rules such as notation and touch move. I will also address parameters of the tournament and answer questions that you all may have. This would be a great meeting to go to if you plan to play the tournament, and I would especially recommend going if you have never played in a tournament before! The actual tournament will run on Thursdays 1/27-3/10 (Seven rounds!). Entry fee is 3 dollars before or on the date of the tournament information day (1/13), after that the registration fee will increase in 5 dollars. Prizes will vary depending on number of registrants, so invite your friends to play to sweeten the pot!

Holiday Season Hiatus

The UC Davis Chess Club is going on hiatus during the Winter break. There will be no official meetings, although members who want to play are encouraged to use this website or the Facebook page to coordinate informal meetings together.

Sacramento Team Champtionship

Since 2008, UC Davis has entered the Sacramento Chess Club Team Championship and our team the UC Davis Knights took first place in 2009.

The tournament is scheduled to begin in January and lasts 6-8 rounds, depending on how many teams enter. Rounds will be played on Tuesday evenings starting at 6:55pm and transportation will be arranged through the club.

The teams consist of up to 9 people, and 6 play every week with 3 alternates. So if you want to commit each week then you can sign up to be a regular, and if you don't think you can play more than one or two weeks, then sign up as an alternate. Typically we try to put together the best 6-person team each week, but we always make sure everyone gets to play a few rounds.

Depending on interest, we may enter with two teams as we did in 2009.

In order to be eligible you must be a registered member in USCF. You can find fee information here or click on the screenshot below. If you are under 25, then the minimum yearly fee is $24.

The tournament will also have a small entry fee, typically $5 or less.

There are prizes/trophies for the winning team as well as for individual players who do well at a certain board. The boards are labeled 1-6, so if you play at the same board each week and do well, you could win a nice prize at the end.

If you are interested, email us or talk to an officer at a meeting. We also need people to drive each week.

Plans for Winter 2011

Hi everyone! Megan, here. We had an officers' meeting today and thought you might like to know the 411. So here's the scoop on what we've got in mind for next quarter.

Weekly tournaments. Possibly with an entrance fee, to help with fund-raising. People could also submit their games for analysis, and then we could decide on the best game.

Fund-raising! Carolina and I both bake, and were thinking chess-themed bake sales with a chess cake, decorated brownies, and gingerbread pawns... Any other ideas?
Extra meetings that focus on game strategy, perhaps with stronger players helping novice players.
We're also probably going to have an info night within the first week or so of next quarter that will go into these things in greater depth.
Social events. Nothing formal, but maybe just days when we all go out for coffee/food or something, so new members have a chance to mingle with older members and everyone gets a chance to know each other. :o)

And on that note, please take the survey at http://aggiechess.blogspot.com/ for what days are good for you to meet for Winter 2011. We're leaning towards Friday, as it would probably be easier to reserve rooms/get people to come--but we want your input!! All it takes is one click of the mouse!

Vote on Best Days for Winter Quarter Meetings

Being election day and all, a new poll has been added to the sidebar of this site. Please answer once you know your class schedule for Winter 2011. You can select multiple days and assume we will be playing at about the same time, 4-6pm (give or take an hour). Your answers really help us decide which days to reserve rooms to get the most people involved, so don't forget to vote!

Also keep in mind that in the past we have attended a team chess tournament in Sacramento, which was on Wednesdays starting at about 7pm. Assuming the tournament is going on as usual, we may put together a team to compete and on those days, we most-likely would not have a regular campus meeting.

USCF Tournament Info

The UC Davis Chess Club occasionally will enter USCF tournaments in Sacramento and the Bay Area. In order to be eligible you must be a registered member. You can find fee information here or click on the screenshot below. If you are under 25, then the minimum yearly fee is $24.

The tournaments will also have an entry fee, which can range from $5-$40 depending on the type of tournament and individual skill level class.

Prizes and trophies are typically given out to top players.

The UC Davis Chess Club is going on hiatus during the Winter break. There will be no official meetings, although members who want to play are encouraged to use this website or the Facebook page to coordinate informal meetings together.

We should be back soon after Winter quarter begins, check back here for information on when and where. Also, if you have not yet voted on which days you would like to meet, please do so now in the right side bar area.

Hi everyone! Megan, here. We had an officers' meeting today and thought you might like to know the 411. So here's the scoop on what we've got in mind for next quarter.

Weekly tournaments. Possibly with an entrance fee, to help with fund-raising. People could also submit their games for analysis, and then we could decide on the best game.

Fund-raising! Carolina and I both bake, and were thinking chess-themed bake sales with a chess cake, decorated brownies, and gingerbread pawns... Any other ideas?
Extra meetings that focus on game strategy, perhaps with stronger players helping novice players.
We're also probably going to have an info night within the first week or so of next quarter that will go into these things in greater depth.
Social events. Nothing formal, but maybe just days when we all go out for coffee/food or something, so new members have a chance to mingle with older members and everyone gets a chance to know each other. :o)

And on that note, please take the survey at http://aggiechess.blogspot.com/ for what days are good for you to meet for Winter 2011. We're leaning towards Friday, as it would probably be easier to reserve rooms/get people to come--but we want your input!! All it takes is one click of the mouse!

Not sure why this happened, but the meeting today got scheduled for the 5-7pm slot, instead of 3-5pm. I will contact SPAC to make sure the rest of the date's times are correct. Anyway, hopefully you all can show up at 5, and my apologies to those that showed up at 3!

Hey all,

Due to a scheduling problem, tomorrow's meeting will from 3pm-5pm, not the usual 4-6pm, in the same area of the ARC. Also, after Monday, our meetings will take place from 5pm-7pm. Hopefully this will not be too confusing. There are also no scheduled meeting times for December. See you guys there!

Being election day and all, a new poll has been added to the sidebar of this site. Please answer once you know your class schedule for Winter 2011. You can select multiple days and assume we will be playing at about the same time, 4-6pm (give or take an hour). Your answers really help us decide which days to reserve rooms to get the most people involved, so don't forget to vote!

Also keep in mind that in the past we have attended a team chess tournament in Sacramento, which was on Wednesdays starting at about 7pm. Assuming the tournament is going on as usual, we may put together a team to compete and on those days, we most-likely would not have a regular campus meeting.

Hey all!

Sorry for the delay, but the Chess club is once again in full swing for the 2010-2011 academic year! We will meet 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the ARC meeting room One for the rest of the quarter (there will be a few meetings in ARC meeting room Three, but this should not make too much of a difference).

Older members may note that this will be a change from our usual Garrison and Fielder rooms in the MU, which for some reason are not being offered this quarter for club reservation. These rooms at the ARC are pretty big, so bring your boards/clocks/friends! The more the merrier.

Our first meeting will be this upcoming Monday, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. October 11th ARC meeting room One. I would like to add that this year we have a large amount of prospective members, who are each at different levels of skill and experience, so don't be shy! We will always have someone at the club who will give you a good game. Have a good rest of the weekend, and see you Monday!

Apologies for the lack of announcements, there really hasn't been much to say yet. The club has been a little delayed in reserving space to play, but we have not forgotten about our loyal members and hopefully we will have something firm to tell you soon.

Hello everyone! Just writing to let you know that the officers for the club met yesterday to discuss plans for the fall quarter. As a preliminary announcement, we will be having our first meeting(s) next week. Times and locations will be announced very soon.

This month we will be recruiting new members, so please tell your friends. We will be making flyers to post around campus as well as a few public events on the quad or silo area. Also, if you are reading this, please answer the poll question about how you learned of the chess club so we can better focus our advertising.

Greetings members!

Do you know what time it is? That's right! It's nearing the end of the year! What does that mean? It means that we'll be holding elections for next year's (2010) officer positions for the magnificent and famous Davis Chess club. The elections will be happening this coming Monday during our meeting (5/24). If you're interested in taking part in the enormous effort to forward the endeavor of excellent and exciting chess playing and awareness, bring your best public relations hat to the meeting so that we can show you our full support! Anyone is eligible. You don't have to be able to beat James to become one; look at me!

Also, aside all that excitement about upcoming elections, there is a large tournament coming up that I have no idea about, so this is a reminder to James/Phil to inform our members about this joyous occasion.

We've had a rocky start but we're ready to rock the rest of the quarter (with consistency). The officers have unanimously decided to hold our weekly meetings on Mondays from 4-6:30 PM in Fielder except for one date (check below). Here are the dates:

Hello again all you loyal chessers!

If you were wondering we still have not settled on the best time to meet this quarter. We found that the 3 hour blocks on one evening worked quite well and hopefully we'll find something that works out for most of our members schedules. Please check your e-mails for a follow-up message about the room/times for this exciting new quarter! If you have any day requests or enormous time conflicts that you know already, please reply to this e-mail so we will accommodate you! Hopefully we'll get the club up and running by next week.

As a side note, we've lost a very valuable friend to the great nation of Brazil this quarter, so if you were wondering where the very punctual and amazing Brazilian chess player had gone, be sure to keep in contact with him!

Hello again all,

We have our official first meeting for the quarter next Thursday (1/14/2010) in our usual MU room Fielder from 4-7 p.m.! The club will usually meet in this room (or Garrison, the room next to Fielder) for the rest of the quarter's Thursdays and as well as the same time.

It would also be VERY nice if those that wish to play in the Sacramento Chess tournament would come to this first meeting so we can discuss some important items, such as:

- transportation to the tournament

- deciding teams, team captains, and of course the most important: Team names.

- Schedules of team players as well as alternates so that we don't have any forfeit matches this year!

Please feel free to ask questions about the tournament at the meeting, here are some basics about the tournament:

- Each team will be comprised of 6 players and 3 alternates

- Rounds will be weekly, starting at 6:55 pm on Wednesdays. The first round is on the 27th, and will be a round robin set up (all teams play all), which means there is no definitive end date at this point in time. The tournament usually goes until Mid-March

- the tournament will be played with a chess clock and USCF rules- those who do not already know what these rules are would benefit from coming to our Thursday meetings!

If you want to play and cannot make this meeting, it is EXTREMELY important that you either respond to this email or contact me personally EVEN if you have previously expressed interest in the tournament to me. We need to have the list of players on our teams BEFORE 1/20, which will be two Wednesdays from now. Hey all,

Hope you guys had a wonderful break! We would love to get the ball rolling again this quarter, but first we need to cover a few thing;

1.) We are changing our usual schedule of two days per week with 2 hours each to just one day a week for 3 hours. This will make it possible for some members who can't usually show up until later in the night to attend our meetings. Any further comments/suggestions on this subject are encouraged.

2.) That said, we now need YOU guys to vote on which day of the week is best for you. We had a problem last quarter picking a good time slot for our members, and many could not attend either of the two meetings. A simple emailed response with a day and preferred time slot would be greatly appreciated.

3.) Finally, the Sacramento chess club team championship is coming up! Players who want to compete, or even those who want to learn by watching, PLEASE notify us ASAP, we have to have our team(s???) ready by the 20th of this month! We hope that we will have as good of a turn out as we did last year, where our team brought home the first place trophy! (figuratively)
